Does Someone You Care About Have A Problem With Drinking
Or Other Drugs?
How Can You Help And Feel Good About It?The answer is a process called intervention. Getting someone help who doesn’t want help is what intervention is all about. That’s not always easy. It takes a lot of preparation and professional guidance to do a professional intervention.
Briefly, what an intervention does is to bring reality to the person affected in a way that they can accept that reality. The reality, for example is that you’re fed up with their drinking or use of other drugs. The reality is that they’re missing work as a result of hangovers or too much “partying” and they may even lose their job. The reality is that they have got to do something.
In an intervention, family members, friends and co-workers present reality as a group in a loving, caring way. Instead of making excuses, blaming others or covering up for the person with the problem. Intervention provides an opportunity to present clear, factual information about the effect the person’s drinking or use of other drugs has on those who care about them.
The most successful interventions take place when the team members, family, friends, co-workers have all been prepared by an intervention professional.INTERVENTION SERVICES
The addictive diseases present a unique problem to community health advocates. Individuals generally do not seek help until a crisis occurs late into the progression of their disease. In many cases, it is a family member or significant other that seek help and assistance in moving the individual into a treatment regime. Assisting family, friends, employees, employer, or others in convincing someone to get help, often when they’re in denial, is a process called intervention. Intervention requires family counseling, family education, and coaching in the process of patient placement. NCADD has been assisting the intervention process for over 40 years and continues to be the first stop on the way to cessation.
NCADD maintains a statewide crisis line to help other communities with the intervention and placement process. The Juneau Affiliate covers all of Alaska with a toll free line that is listed in all phone books throughout the state. Calls for help are received through a dedicated line and are forwarded to on call staff after hours. NCADD maintains an updated list of approved treatment programs that receive referrals in Alaska and all across the nation. This service is coordinated with other NCADD Affiliate offices in the lower 48 states.
